Four people remain in hospital after three masked intruders broke into a home on Hyde Park Circle in Toronto's Bridle Path neighbourhood early Thursday morning and opened fire during a struggle.
Toronto police responded to reports of a violent home invasion at approximately 3:43 a.m., according to Insp. Kristy Smith. Three suspects armed with handguns and a hammer entered the residence through a rear entrance and confronted a family of four consisting of a husband, wife, and their two adult daughters.
During the altercation, the intruders demanded valuables and fired their weapons multiple times. The father and two daughters sustained gunshot wounds, while the mother was struck with a hammer. Two of the victims are currently being treated for life-altering injuries, and the remaining two sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The suspects fled the scene in an SUV, and investigators have not yet determined whether anything was stolen or if the residence was specifically targeted.
Incidents of armed violence reaching into residential neighbourhoods test the limits of urban safety and demand a clear response from law enforcement. When security fails behind closed doors, the public trust in municipal policing is tested just as severely as the resources deployed to track down fleeing suspects.
Police have asked anyone with information regarding the SUV or the suspects to contact investigators as the search continues.
